Hut Reservations powered by ELCA

The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), founded in 1863, has grown into one of the most significant organizations in the Alpine region, boasting over 175,000 members as of 2023. For more than 160 years, the SAC has profoundly influenced Switzerland's mountaineering culture and alpine infrastructure. In collaboration with Alpine Clubs from Germany, Austria, and South Tyrol, it manages several hundred mountain huts across the Alps.

A decade ago, the Online Hut Reservation System (OHRS) was introduced, developed by ELCA, a trusted partner of these associations. For the 2025 winter season, a modernized version of the system has been implemented, offering enhanced user-friendliness and comprehensive features. The decision to develop a new system from scratch was driven by the increasing complexity and cost of extensions, as well as the outdated user interface.

The challenges for such a system in the high mountains, where network coverage is often poor, are numerous. Intuitive user guidance is crucial for both guests and hut wardens, who may not be "digital natives" and require flexibility. Insights from the previous system were utilized in workshops to develop the new solution.

The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and ELCA have revolutionized mountain hut bookings with a modernized Online Hut Reservation System.

SaaS-based Cloud Solution

To adhere to the financial framework of the Alpine Clubs and ensure sustainable cooperation, ELCA opted for the SaaS (Software as a Service) model. During the agile development phase, emphasis was placed on maintaining the functional coverage of the existing solution while incorporating numerous extensions. A particular challenge was the secure transfer of existing reservation data.

Highlights of the New Version

The new version is utilized in over 500 huts across the Alpine region and offers several improvements:

  • Integrated ePayment to reduce no-shows and late cancellations
  • Bed management by hut wardens with individual assignment
  • Long-term management options for guests
  • Easier integration into portals, such as the SAC tour portal, for faster capacity retrieval

The OHRS is a flagship project with the label "powered by ELCA," distinguishing both the SAC and ELCA as innovative organizations. With this technological advancement, the SAC demonstrates its ability to adapt and innovate, enhancing the alpine experience while preserving the tradition of Swiss alpinism.
